The Nervous System Toolbox

So much of what I share across this site comes back to one idea: your nervous system needs real tools, not just willpower, to move out of stress and into calm. Here's a running collection of the mind-body tools I trust most, some are free, some are apps, some are things you already read about on other pages.

Apps worth trying

  • Calm and Meditopia, approachable daily meditation and sleep content, good for beginners.
  • Medito, free, no ads, a great no-pressure starting point.
  • Breathwrk, goal-specific breathing exercises ("Energize," "De-Stress," "Sleep").
  • Breath Ball, a simple visual breathing guide (a ball that expands and contracts) that's especially good for kids or anyone who finds guided meditation intimidating.
  • The Wim Hof Method app, breathwork paired with cold exposure training, for anyone ready to go a step further.

Practices that don't need an app

  • Breathwork, even five slow, deep breaths activates your vagus nerve and starts shifting you out of fight-or-flight.
  • Cold exposure, a cold shower finish or a cold plunge for a fast nervous-system reset.
  • Sauna, heat-based relaxation and circulation support.
  • Float tanks, for when your nervous system needs a total break from input.
  • Vagus nerve stimulation tools, from something as simple as humming or gargling to wearable devices.

The Anxiety Support page has the family-specific tools.

You don't need all of these. You need the one or two that actually fit your life, and the willingness to use them before you're already at your limit.

A note from Melissa

These are all tools in the toolbox. Healing takes time, but the more you know, the better off you are. There is no quick fix. Empower yourself.

Personal experience and research, not medical advice or guidance.
